The Tack of Success

Description

Please ... Ladies and Gentlemen ...

Before you, lie the ruins of the Sulfur City of Flurina. Legend has it, that the ancients built their city in this particular spot, because it was the last place where God sat down on the Earth. You could tell, it was said, by two things:

The first was the shape of the valley itself; like the imprint of two giant cheeks of an enormous ... Yes, ... I see you get the idea!

The second thing thought noteworthy, was the presence of the gigantic glass thumbtack on the hill to the right.

Over the years, a ritual grew concerning the tack. It started off as a mere game, but if the forefathers had seen its outcome, they would surely have banned it. Young men would vie for the prestige of being the first to climb to the top of the hundred-foot glass spire, so much so, in fact, that the object became known as "The Tack of Success", for the man who succeeded in conquering the tack would be widely feted, and his rise would be rapid indeed.

Alas, the competition to beat the spire became so obsessive, that each night, at least one young man would climb the hill to spend a solitary, contemplative night in the single, small hut below the tack. In the morning, so inevitably that the people had long ceased to watch, the young man would fail in his attempt, and fall to his death.

So it was, that before the elders realised what was happening, the loss of so many young men caused the population of the city to decline, and eventually, it withered and died ... and all for a vain, foolish notion.

(Created in Vue 6 Esprit for :iconzaichick: as an illustration of her sig line: May you sit on the tack of success and rapidly rise.)

Nice and inventive. You would get a lot more visual realism if you rendered using the Ambient Occlusion lighting model. Not as time consuming as GI or GR but a whole world better than Standard. :)
